Types Of Homes We Can Build

Colonial Homes: Inspired by the early American settlers, Colonial homes are characterized by their symmetrical facades, square or rectangular shapes, and gabled roofs. Often two or three stories, they typically feature brick or wood siding and have a central front door flanked by multi-pane windows.

Cape Cod Homes: Originating from New England, Cape Cod homes have gained popularity in Central New Jersey. These are typically one or one-and-a-half-story houses with steep pitched roofs, symmetrical appearances, and dormer windows.

Ranch Style Homes: A post-World War II architecture, Ranch homes are one-story houses that spread out rather than building up. They feature simple, open floor plans and often have attached garages.

Victorian Homes: These homes boast intricate designs and ornate details, often painted in multiple colors. Features include steep pitched roofs, bay windows, and large front porches. Their asymmetrical shape and decorative trim give them a distinctive charm.

Craftsman Bungalows: Known for their overhanging eaves, exposed rafters, and handcrafted details, Craftsman homes prioritize functionality and artisanal work. They often have wide front porches supported by square columns.

Townhouses: Common in more urban or densely populated parts of Central New Jersey, townhouses are multi-floor homes that share one or two walls with adjacent properties. They often come with small outdoor spaces and are efficient for tighter plots of land.

Split-level Homes: These are characterized by staggered floor levels. Typically, the main level will have a living room and kitchen, a few steps up will lead to bedrooms, and a few steps down will lead to additional living or utility spaces.

Modern & Contemporary Homes: While sometimes used interchangeably, "modern" refers to homes inspired by the modernist movement of the early 20th century, whereas "contemporary" refers to homes built based on today's architectural trends. Both styles prioritize clean lines, open spaces, large windows, and minimalistic design.

Farmhouses: A nod to Central New Jersey's agrarian past, modern farmhouses merge the rustic charm of the traditional farmhouse with updated features. Expect to see large porches, gabled rooflines, and a mix of wood and metal finishes.

Custom Builds: As the name suggests, these homes are tailor-made to the homeowner's preferences, often blending various architectural styles or introducing unique features to fit specific needs and aesthetics.

Dave Bekus On Custom Homes:

The American Dreams includes a home. Thomas Jefferson built a world around Monticello. George Washington escaped from the burdens of public life at Mt. Vernon. The Greeks, the Romans-particularly, reveled in construction. Winston Churchill thought his life incomplete without Chartwell-a home he used his own hands to construct parts of. ‘Home and hearth, coming home, home sweet home’; these phrases have meaning because of the chord they strike within us. If you’re building your own home you are in excellent company and should treat the project with a measure of reverence.

The production homes of today are designed for any person. We respond to the new and the open and what we think what our friends and neighbors think; taken by the newness and openness. As if newness and openness are the beginning and end of architecture. The suburban buildings of today are an everyman house. And every subsequent owner will never think twice about who owned it before. But a building that was constructed by a personality will tell a story to everyone who enters it.  Architecture should take a person on a journey, you should find yourself asking ‘why did the architect do this –why is it this way’ or you have a feeling the building connects you to something larger, the same questions when you walk through a forest and wonder about creation.

The above is not say a production home cannot seek the higher aspirations of a ‘home’. Builders can bring you the materials and structure of a house and the owners can turn a house into a home. It only requires a bit of personality, a sense of proportion, good design, and the means to do it. A simple stone building set in the woods with the proper proportion can summon the same admiration as grand architectural details. Expectations, hopes and dreams can all be realized under the roof and next to the hearth of a home.

Considerations Before Constructing Your Home

Lot Selection:

  • Where do you want your home located?
  • Have you secured a suitable lot, and does it fit within the constraints of your vision for the home?
  • Consider the lot's topography, accessibility, and any potential zoning or building restrictions.

Site Preparation:

  • Does the lot require clearing of trees, rocks, or other obstructions?
  • What kind of excavation or grading will be necessary to prepare the foundation?

Size and Layout:

  • How large do you want the home to be in terms of square footage?
  • How many floors will the house have?

Room Count and Functionality:

  • How many bedrooms and bathrooms are essential?
  • Are spaces like a home office, gym, or guest room important to incorporate?
  • Do you require any multi-purpose rooms that can evolve with your family's needs?

Special Considerations:

  • Are there specific needs or hobbies to accommodate, such as a workshop, music room, or home theater?
  • If you anticipate multi-generational living, would you need an in-law suite?
  • Consider any mobility requirements that might necessitate wider doorways, ramps, or an elevator.

Architectural and Design Elements:

  • What architectural style resonates with you?
  • Would you prefer an open floor plan or more traditional, compartmentalized rooms?

Finishing Materials:

  • What types of flooring, cabinetry, countertops, and wall finishes do you envision?
  • Consider the longevity, maintenance, and aesthetic appeal of each material.

Budget:

  • Establish a clear budget from the outset. This will guide many of the decisions throughout the building process.
  • Remember to account for "hidden costs" like permits, fees, and any unforeseen construction challenges.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency:

  • Do you want to incorporate energy-efficient appliances, windows, or insulation?
  • Would you consider renewable energy sources like solar panels?

Landscape and Exterior:

  • How do you envision the exterior spaces, such as patios, decks, gardens, or pools?
  • Would you like a specific landscaping theme or garden style?

Timeframe:

When would you like to move into your custom home? Remember to account for any potential delays in construction, permitting, or material sourcing.

We were so impressed

We were so impressed with the high quality of work you provided changing 337 chimney caps in one of our Condo Associations. Thank you for the great job you did rebuilding 2 burned out town houses. You delivered the newly built homes on time, within budget and to the satisfaction of everyone involved.

I met Dave Bekus through our local bank VP.

I met Dave Bekus through our local bank VP. I had plans for my "Dream House" designed by Taliesin of Scottsdale, Arizona. Dave and I worked together hand and glove to bring this project to fruition. I could not have asked for a better builder who was most knowledgeable and honest. Where I not 71 years old I would love to work on another project with Dave--and anyway how many people actually get to build their dream house and enjoy it every day?

Rick Harris

We first met Dave over 16 years ago

We first met Dave over 16 years ago when a co-worker recommended him when we were looking for a contractor to put new siding on our house. Since then, we always call Dave when we need a contractor (he has since put on our new roof and installed new doors and a deck). Dave always returns calls and keeps us informed regarding all aspects of our projects. His crews show up on time, are professional, pay attention to details, and take pride in their work. Everyone treats our home with respect and the property is always clean when the project is completed. We would recommend Dave to anyone who is looking for a contractor for their home improvement project.
